« Biar was a folie, but it was also an agricultural farmhouse.
I love this ambivalence, a place of pleasure and a farm.
We nourish the flesh as well as the senses, in a manner that is in the end spiritual.”

Bertrand Schmitt

Domaine de Biar today…

A place where man and nature meet
The historical meaning of “Folie” (folia, which means leave in Latin) is “a place where man goes to be with nature”..
Domaine de Biar is a Folie Montpelliéraine, a residence of pleasure that offers the flower of the city under the old regime. The Folies were built in the countryside, in the middle of agricultural lands and vineyards. The splendour and care given to their architecture and their gardens embodied the achievements of their owners.

2007, the renaissance of the “Folie” of Domaine de Biar
In 2007, Bertrand Schmitt fell in love with this place when he entered its castle, going from room to room, venturing into the outbuildings, and strolling into the abandoned park. The restoration work and development was done with the respect of the environment in mind, to welcome lovers of serenity, authenticity and harmony.
The Domaine has again become a habitable place, where men and horses live in harmony. Apart from the charming guest rooms, the apartment, the suite and the reception areas for visits in complete harmony with nature, Biar has also found it’s original activity: breeding and training horses of the Camargue.

The History of Domaine de Biar

It’s origin goes back to the 12th century…
The Domaine is located close to an ancient road Voie Domitienne (Via Domitia), built around 120 before J.C., and connected Italy to Spain. Biar is a medieval heritage of German origin. It is cited the first time in 1155 under the name Manso de Biars.
The young King Louis signed an act which authorized the sale of Biar in 1727 by Charles Joachim-Colbert, Bishop of Montpellier and Maguelone.
The Baron, Joseph Bonnier of Mosson, treasurer of grants of the Languedoc province and a great enthusiast of arts and science, became the owner and began major construction work.
From 1882, the Domaine belonged to the agronomist Henri Marès, who is known for his discovery of treatments for diseases that affected grape vines. Marés was also the owner of the elegant Château de l’Engarran, which is located very near Biar.

Henri Marès dreamt of offering Domaine de Biar to his daughter Henriette to whom he dreamt of offering this beautiful place surrounded by an abundant natural setting.. Unfortunately, he did not have time to finish his work and the property fell into oblivion and suffered the ravages of time.
